MAN CITY PROGRESS TO NATIONAL FINAL
Man City U14 girls football team won the Tesco Cup Northern England Regional Final at the University of Manchester on Saturday. The girls now advance to the English Final of the Tesco Cup at the Walkers Stadium, Leicester on 17 May.
Manchester City played well throughout the day, going undefeated and not conceding a single goal. ‘Player of the Tournament' Rachel Moss led the line for City being a constant threat in front of goal. Teammate Holly Brady won the ‘Best Defender' award impressing with her one -on -one tackling.
In the final against Sheffield United Ladies, City started well with an early goal which calmed their nerves. The girls controlled most of the game, without being able to add a crucial second goal. With time running out Sheffield United piled on the pressure, leading to a late goal taking the game to penalties. Having already survived a penalty shootout in the Semis, City won 7-6.
Former Man Utd footballer David May and Nottingham Forest women's player Levi Penny attended the tournament, and selected the following players to win individual awards:
Best Goalkeeper Lauren Santoro (Sheffield United Ladies)
Best Defender Holly Brady (Manchester City Girls)
Best Midfielder Kim Brown (Sheffield United Ladies)
Best Forward Sophie Matthews (Middlesbrough Ladies)
Player of the Tournament Rachel Moss (Manchester City Ladies)
Tesco Cup Ambassador David May commented: ‘I am delighted to be an Ambassador for the Tesco Cup. It is great to hear that over 3500 teams have taken part across the country, which demonstrates the success of the tournament. I have been really impressed by the standard of play at the Northern England Regional Final.'
