DES WALKER TO ATTEND ENGLISH FINAL
Former England international Des Walker will attend the Tesco Cup English Final on Sunday May 17 at the Walkers Stadium, home of newly promoted Leicester City. Over 3,700 teams entered the 2009 Tesco Cup competition and just 12 teams have progressed through the County and Regional stages to reach the National final.
In each age group - U13 boys, U14 girls, U16 girls - 4 teams representing County Football Associations across England will battle to be crowned National Champions and earn a place in the UK final at the Reebok Stadium Bolton on May 24.
Tesco Cup Ambassador Des Walker commented: ‘When I was a young footballer I dreamt of playing at a major football ground, so it is a fantastic opportunity for the teams to play at the Walkers Stadium in the Tesco Cup English Final, I am sure the youngsters will really enjoy the experience. Over 60,000 players entered the 2009 competition, so the teams have done incredibly well to reach this stage of the tournament. I look forward to spotting potential stars of the future and wish all the footballers the best of luck for the day.'
The Tesco Cup is part of a wider commitment from Tesco to encourage children to get involved in sport. Now in its fourth year, Tesco works in conjunction with the FA and local communities to help improve the football skills of young players.
At the 2008 English Final, Birmingham FA (Binbrook FC) won the U13 boys, Lancashire FA (Preston North End) won the U14 girls and Hertfordshire (Bedwell Rangers) were victorious in the U16 girls age category.
